What is a HavaChon?
It is a fact
that almost every recognized breed of dog today was created by the breeding of 2 or more different kinds
of dogs. Over the centuries people needed dogs for various uses, and dogs were bred to have certain traits and
characteristics based on those needs. They were also bred to eliminate negative characteristics that might cause
health issues.
The
HavaChon is a cross between a purebred Bichon Frise and the purebred Havanese. The
HavaChon is not currently an individual breed recognized by the AKC. Therefore, because it is not considered a
purebred dog, it is called a Hybrid. Who knows, that definition may change over
time as the demand for this wonderfully colorful HavaChon breed increases.

As with any
Hybrid, the best way to determine the temperment, color, and size the dog will be is to look up all of the breeds
in the cross. You will then know that you can get any combination of any of the charateristics found in either
breed.
The
Bichon Frise is a small white very
fluffy dog that loves human company. It has a bit of an independent spirit, is very affectionate,
intelligent, and has lots of energy. These little dogs do not yap. They have a very self assured and loving
temperament that is addictive! Bichons are very easy to train. They love and truly need to be with people to be
happy. They are their happiest when they are part of a family that takes them everywhere. They are good with other
dogs, pets, and children. Used as watchdogs and to perform tricks, this breed is competitve and obedient.
Their curly coat is non-shedding making it suitable for allergy sufferers. Grooming on a regular basis is
necessary.

The
Havanese is a
highly trainable and intelligent breed. They are naturally affectionate which makes them an ideal family pet.
Although they are a fairly small dog, they are very energetic and require some form of daily exercise. The
silky non-shedding coat comes in a variety of colors. Regular grooming is necessary to keep the coat in top
condition.

Purebreds or Hybrids?
As breeders of both purebred and hybrid puppies, we hear a
lot of irrational thoughts regarding whether or not the breeding of different purebreds to
produce the desirable traits of a hybrid puppy is a responsible thing to do. The truth is,
some hybrids make more sense that others. Breeding complimentary breeds for hybridization, like the
Bichons and Havanese to produce HavaChon puppies, can improve the
chances for good health and for less genetic disorders. If two breeds are not complimentary, then
breeding these would in our opinion be irresponsible. You want to take into consideration the size,
temperment and appearances of the two breeds. You do not want such dramatic differences that it will be hard
to predict what your hybrid will be like.
We love the size, the temperament, the health, and the coat
of the HavaChon. As we like to say, with Havachons, "Love comes in so many
colors!"
